Highs & Lows

Lake Bohinj is just stunning and peaceful in March!

I wish it was easier for me to speak some of the language so I could have chatted with more locals.

Itinerary Overview

  1. From Brussels, I flew to  Ljubljana.
  2. Spent 3 nights and 4 days exploring this quaint city
  3. I rented a car and hit the road towards Bled, stopping en route in the quaint hill-town of Kranj.
  4. Bled was my launch pad for 4 nights to explore Lake Bled and neighboring towns.
  5. I visited the tranquil shores of Lake Bohinj and the charming villages tucked between the two lakes
  6. I drove and hiked through some of Triglav National Park, which has ancient forests, thundering waterfalls, and imposing peaks.
  7. Bidding farewell to Bled, I stopped in medieval Skofja Loka, a time-capsule town, before returning to Ljubljana.
  8. Finally, caught a train from Ljubljana to my next destination - Zagreb, Croatia.

Ljubljana is easy to walk around, not overcrowded at all, and a beautiful city in which to get lost. There are so many sidewalk restaurants and cafes, and there are many parks and squares to people-watch.

Cute retail stores to peruse and purchase local things. I bought an adjustable eyelet fabric hat that's become my favorite hat. The store is called RIKOMA MIHA KOTAR S.P.

Tivoli Park is especially nice for a stroll and a proper hike. Feels like you're not even in the middle of a city.

On the way to Bled and around, there's so much countryside and farmland. Cute villages and towns between Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. Trigalv National Park is full of small waterfalls and lovely easy-to-access hikes.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I would have explored more of Ljubljana.

  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

The rental car place was a bit hard to find.

  • Restaurant recommendations?

Tavci Kuhna & Ayatana deli: Great place to people watch over lunch or tea and dessert. Good food and nice staff.

Lodging

  • I stayed at an AirBnb called Vila Jakopič, located in Mirje neighborhood, one of the most peaceful, but central suburbs of Ljubljana. Ljubljanica river and old city center are just a short walk away.

This building was home to Rihard Jakopič, central figure in Slovenian painting in the first half of the 20th century. He is considered a pioneer of Slovenian impressionist painting.

Loved the architecture and the quiet. The hosts were great. Couldn't have been a better stay.

  • AirBnb behind Bled Castle on Grajska cesta (Castle Road). The building is on a working farm of sorts. You can see people farming produce, I think.

The building feels like it was just converted from whatever it was but not fully finished. But the apartment itself was very modern and had everything I could possibly want.

The only issue is that because you're behind the castle on a working farm, it's pitch black at night, so you wouldn't necessarily want to walk around, and it was far from the "downtown."  Fortunately, I had a car so going out at night wasn't a big deal.

Also, it's a little hard to find because of its location off a gravel road.
