Itinerary Overview
My friend and I spent 5 days in Morocco in mid-February.
We went on lots of excursions but it was a pity the weather wasn't warm enough to make the most of them. There's no need to spend more than a week in Marrakech. With the right organization, we can quickly get the whole picture, and that's enough to give you a complete change of scenery.
The Ourika valley is 1 hour from Marrakech. It's a great place to see the vegetation, the waterfall and the colorful restaurants that surround the river. Once there, we first climbed the mountain for 20 minutes (via a small path) to reach the highest point and watch the water tumbling down from the valley. We made our way back down, meeting monkeys in the trees. My favorite moment was sitting on the ground eating from my terracotta dish facing the river. Dozens of cats surround you, the colors are magnificent, the sound of nature is very relaxing. The hike isn't long, but the spot is well worth the effort - it's a bit of a must-see. On the way back to the road, we stopped to take a ride on a camel - they're everywhere!
The Agafay desert is a pleasant desert with a breathtaking sunset view, perfect with a cup of mint tea. It's best to choose a day with good, clear weather, especially if you decide to go quad biking. For my part, while we were quad biking at dusk, the weather was mixed and the wind was blowing us around, so we were really dusty by the end of the ride! Luckily, there was a blower to dust us off, which was fun.
Quad biking is a big thing over there, so if you like sensational activities, it's fun. It allows us to discover the desert faster than on foot! Alternatively, you can take a camel for a leisurely ride, a typical means of transport.
After the activity, still in the desert, we went to eat in a large tent lined with carpets, comfortable footstools and low tables, eating on the ground with around thirty other people. Once we were settled in, we were surprised to hear a Moroccan band play Moroccan music for 30 minutes non-stop, and they got us to join in - it was a magical moment, and the people were adorable. At the same time, we were served delicious, hearty dishes. An unforgettable evening, cut off from the outside world.
