Highs & Lows
Eating oysters and exploring the historic districts
Hurricane Maria almost hit, so many of the shops in Charleston and Savannah were boarded up
Itinerary Overview
- Day 1 -- Charleston Shopping & Eating
- Explored the houses on Rainbow Row (a series of historic homes that are all different pastel colors)
- Shopped on King Street (includes stores like J. Crew, Vineyard Vines, Anthropologie)
- Lunch at Palmetto Café
- Dinner at Fig
- Drinks at the Vendue hotel on the rooftop
- Day 2 -- Charleston Beach Day
- Relaxed on the beach at Sullivan's Island
- Dinner at The Obstinate Daughter (so good!)
- Day 3 -- Charleston History Tour
- Toured the Magnolia Plantation
- Had oysters, cocktails, and appetizers at The Darling Oyster Bar -- this is a must if you love seafood!
- Dinner at 492 (across the street)
- Day 4 -- Charleston History Tour, continued
- Visited the Aiken Rhett House
- Brunch at Butcher & Bee
- Dinner at Husk (this is a must! it's located in the cutest old white house in the heart of Charleston's historic area)
- Day 5 -- Back to the beach, Hilton Head!
- Drove 1.5 hours down to Hilton Head from Savannah
- Relaxed by our hotel pool and at the beach, we stayed at the Westin, it was great!
- Then drove to Skull Creek Boathouse for a casual dinner on the patio
- Day 6 -- Exploring Savannah
- Drove another hour to get to Savannah and stayed in a boutique hotel the Historic District (which is a nice, central area).
- The city is super walkable to so we mainly just toured around on foot.
- Must-do's are: Forsyth Park, walk through the garden "squares" around the Historic District, and checked out the waterfront area. My favorite store was The Paris Market, so definitely check that out!
- Stopped for tea at The Gryphon Tea Room
- Had dinner at The Olde Pink House (built in the late 1700s and houses a lot of history -- it's even said to be "haunted"!)
- Day 7 -- Savannah continued
- Visited the Wormsloe Historic Site which is covered in beautiful Spanish moss.
- Stopped for drinks at The Grey (which is an old diner that was converted into a bar), and then Treylor Park, followed by dessert at Lulu's Chocolate Bar.

What would you have changed?
I would have wanted to spend more time in Savannah! The city is absolutely beautiful and I felt like there were still areas I wanted to explore.Tips you would give a friend?
If visiting from far away (i.e. west coast), allow yourself a full week to visit both Charleston and Savannah.Transportation Tips?
Rent a car to drive between Charleston, the surrounding beaches, and Savannah. However, once in the cities its very easy to get around by Uber.Anything go wrong during the trip?
At the tail end of the trip, a lot of shops and restaurants started boarding up their doors in preparation for a massive hurricane. Fortunately the hurricane never hit, but because they advised people to evacuate the areas, the city was left very quiet.Packing tips?
Prepare for rain! Sudden, heavy rainstorms are common so dress in layers and bring a light rain coat. Also, expect some humidity!Restaurant recommendations?
The food in Charleston and Savannah were a-maz-ing! One morning I woke up sick, but my friend went to Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, which is said to have the best fried chicken in Savannah. It's a cash-only, $25/per person, and is limited to a small number of seats per day. The other couple of restuarants you must check out are Husk, The Darling Oyster Bar, and Butcher and Bee in Charleston, as well as The Olde Pink House in Savannah.
