Itinerary Overview
Winding along the southern Victorian coast just a few hours out of Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road is one of Australia’s most popular attractions, a sea of tourists cluttered around every beautiful viewpoint and an alarming number of signs reminding visitors to drive on the left in Australia. It’s popular for a reason; the wind-whipped sea cliffs, crescent coves, and flourishing koala population are enough to draw locals down the coast in equally high numbers.
From Melbourne, it only takes a few hours especially if you take the freeway that takes you directly to apollo bay and 12 Apostles.
This itinerary makes the perfect weekend trip as you can see the best of the best of Great Ocean Road drive in just 3 days and 2 night. It is one of the best road trip experiences I’ve ever experienced.
Start your trip in Melbourne and only one hour drive you will get to torquay. Torquay is a surfing town, birthplace of RipCurl and Quicksilver. But if you aren’t up for surfing, there are some nice sandy beaches and walking trails along the coast that you can follow.
After a 2 hour drive from torquay we arrive to bimbi park where we set up our camping for the night to come.
The first day is all about seeing the most famous attraction in Victoria, 12 Apostles, and visiting all the major landmarks in Port Campbell National Park.
From the camping ground you can walk to Cape Otway Lightstation, which you must pay an entry fee to see.
Around these area it’s a popular drive to spot koalas. Tourists will be pulled over all along the road.
The next major stop is Gibson Steps, which are a MUST if you are able to do stairs. The steps lead down the sheer cliff to a beautiful sandy beach, where you will have a view of 2 Apostle-like rock formations. But these are not considered part of the Twelve Apostles.
Very nearby are the Twelve Apostles, themselves! There is a large car park, bathrooms, information centre, and a trail that crosses under the Great Ocean Road to multiple viewpoints of the rock structures and beautiful coastline.
