Itinerary Overview
Upon my arrival in Guatemala, following an extensive bus journey from Nicaragua's León to Antigua, I was greeted by the warm embrace of my Homestay host family in the evening. As the third destination on my Central American adventure, Guatemala left an indelible mark on me through its captivating charm.
One of the foremost reasons I wholeheartedly recommend visiting San Marcos and Antigua in Guatemala is the unparalleled hospitality that permeates the country. From the moment I stepped foot in the region, I was welcomed with open arms and genuine smiles, making me feel like a part of the community rather than just a traveler passing through.
San Marcos, nestled amidst the captivating landscapes of Guatemala, offers a serene escape that's perfect for soul-searching and self-discovery. The tranquil atmosphere, coupled with the stunning Lake Atitlán, creates an ideal backdrop for introspection and rejuvenation. Engaging with the indigenous Mayan culture in San Marcos is an enriching experience, providing insight into a way of life deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality.
Antigua, on the other hand, presents a juxtaposition of historical grandeur and modern vibrancy. Its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and vibrant markets offer a glimpse into the country's rich past. As I explored the charming streets, I couldn't help but be captivated by the intricate details of the buildings and the stories they held. Additionally, the city's dynamic energy, fueled by a blend of local culture and international influences, provides a unique urban experience.
For nature enthusiasts and adventurers, Guatemala's collection of volcanoes is a highlight that's not to be missed. The sight of these majestic peaks, some still active, serves as a reminder of the country's dynamic geological makeup. Climbing a volcano, such as Pacaya or Acatenango, rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views that extend beyond the horizon, leaving an imprint on your memory that lasts a lifetime.
In conclusion, a journey to San Marcos and Antigua, Guatemala, is an invitation to explore a land brimming with warm hospitality, ancient cultures, and awe-inspiring natural wonders. This country of volcanoes offers a diverse range of experiences that cater to every traveler's desires, making it an essential destination for those seeking to be touched by the heart and soul of Central America.
Antigua - Homestay in a local Family
Antigua for me was a special city, the vibe was so relaxed, beautiful buildings and places. I hadn´t any experience with a Homestay before and living in a local Family. It was the absolutely perfect place to complete the visit in the Spanish School, you can speak to the family just in spanish or at least in this family I stayed and that´s really nice, if you wanna improve or practice spanish. I really enjoyed the stay with the other housemates as well. It was such a great time over there.
Besides the school there is a lot other things to do, few times a week I went to Salsa Classes, there a some Yoga Classes as well, nice Rooftop Bars, where you can see Fuego erupting (with a bit luck and good view) or going for some Hikes, like the most popular Acatenango or Pacaya for example.
Lake Attilán - San Marcos - Del Lago Hotel
San Marcos was a tiny spiritual place at the Lake Attilán. For me it was a special energy you can feel over there. The vibe is definitely calm, chilled open for new energy flow or creating stuff and do nice Yoga with view at the Lake. I had a special time over there because I met two people, I wasn´t supposed to meet over there. A kind of coincidence but in the end probably more fate. I highly recommend this place just to be.
Nestled by the tranquil shores of Lake Atitlán, San Marcos is a spiritual haven that exudes a unique energy. At Del Lago Hotel, immerse yourself in lakeside serenity, where the aura invites introspection and rejuvenation. Engage in yoga sessions with breathtaking lake vistas, fostering a deep connection to nature. Serendipitous encounters await, as the community's open-hearted atmosphere encourages meaningful connections, making San Marcos a must-visit for soulful experiences.
