Highs & Lows

The airbnb experiences are not to be missed! They are a great way to get to know the city in a short amount of time.

The streets are incredibly dirty with a lot of trash.

Itinerary Overview

My boyfriend and I took a weekend trip to Havana Cuba for the weekend and it was and I am so glad I went. Havana is a beautiful city with so much culture and history and waiting to be explored. I found this city to be very safe and the people to be really friendly. I stayed at CasaMeyly 1 which can be booked through Airbnb. I absolutely loved this Airbnb as it had a beautiful private room, a rooftop with a beautiful view of the city and a delicious fresh breakfast every morning. The first night I arrived in Cuba we walked around the city and then we headed to El Ancla Habana for dinner. This is a great restaurant with delicious traditional Cuban food and located on a very cute street. The next morning, I had breakfast on the rooftop of my Airbnb and then walked through Plaza 13 de Marzo which has some art sculptures and is a very nice walk. We then walked to Parque Martires del 71 which is along the water and a very nice view. There is a lot of photo opportunities, so I recommend bringing a nice camera to capture the scenery and get some shots of old Cuban cars which are all over the city. We then headed to grab some lunch at Cafeteria Pilon which is a cute little café with outdoor seating. We both ordered their Cuban sandwich, and it was so delicious. If you enjoy eating meat, I highly recommend ordering this dish. After lunch we headed to an Airbnb experience called walking tour with an economist. This was the highlight of my trip because I got to learn about the history of Cuba and how to affects the people who live in the Cuba and how communism has impacted the people there. The tour ends by going to one of the guide’s mothers house where she told us about her experience living in Cuba and we got to eat some snacks and drink rum. That night we headed to Fabrica de Arte Cubano for dinner and drinks. This was one of my favorite restaurants on the trip because of the unique quality of this restaurant. It was renovated from an old steel factory and the whole place is amazing to look at. After dinner we headed downstairs to the bar and art museum. The mojitos are delicious, and I definitely recommend ordering them. Each room in this museum has a unique theme and there is live music and beautiful paintings throughout. After La Fabrica. The next morning, we headed to meet a friend who lives in Havana and went to an Cuban restaurant called La Guarida and then walked around the city exploring old Havana. We tried to find some rooftops to explore and check out views of the old city. Iberostar Parque Central is a beautiful hotel that had an amazing view of the city and a rooftop pool. We ended up getting drinks from the bar there and watched the sunset. We then went for dinner and then headed to another Airbnb experience called pregame in my apartment and then bar hop. This tour was also very fun and we ended up going to King Bar which is a really fun bar for dancing and drinks. The next morning we headed to Playas de Este to spend time at the beach. It was a beautiful beach and we spent time swimming in the ocean and we ate some fresh caught octopus as well. After the beach we had to head back to our Airbnb and head back to the airport. I will definitely be back to Havana for another trip sometime in the future!

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I would have packed hiking boots for walking around the city.
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

I got off early from the taxi on the way to the beach and I think I went to a worse beach than I had wanted to go to. I think the taxi drivers get paid by the workers on the beaches to drop tourists off at certain locations so make sure you go to the location you want to.
  • Restaurant recommendations?

El Cocinero in Havana has a beautiful view and great food.
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Take airbnb walking tours while you are there! They are very affordable and informative.
  • Packing tips?

Bring walking shoes you don't mind getting dirty.
  • Transportation Tips?

Taxi works great and you can ask to take a taxi in an old fashioned cuban car too!
  • Any surprises?

The roads can be pretty dirty.
  • Booking details?

I used Airbnb and it was cost effective.
