Itinerary Overview
Day 1
Our first day was spent exploring China town and the surrounding area.
- Petaling st Markets - A huge street market in china town, selling everything from food, to shoes, and everything in between. (Jalan Alor night markets were also good but smaller and more food orientated. Good if you wanted to get some dinner and dessert)
- Street art by Julia Volchkova - A short walk from the markets you will find colourful streets filled will street art. The one mentioned was my favourites, but if you walk around this area you will find a lot more.
Day 2
We woke up early and got an Grab to Batu caves. (Around a 15 minute drive from the city centre.) The caves/temples were absolutely stunning and also free, so great if you're on a budget. We arrived just before 8am to avoid the heat and the crowds.
Tip
- Try and go in the morning as it gets very hot inside the caves.
- Wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders.

As I wandered through the vibrant Petaling Street Markets in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown, I was captivated by the bustling atmosphere and diverse offerings. This sprawling street market was a treasure trove of goods, with stalls selling everything from clothing and shoes to unique trinkets and souvenirs. The vibrant colors and energetic calls of the vendors filled the air, creating an invigorating sensory experience.
The aroma of delicious street food beckoned from every corner, tempting passersby with its enticing scents. From savory skewered meats to fragrant noodles and crispy spring rolls, the variety of local delicacies was abundant. It was impossible to resist the temptation to indulge in the mouthwatering flavors that permeated the market.
As I ventured further, I discovered the Jalan Alor night markets nearby, a haven for food enthusiasts. These smaller markets were focused primarily on delectable dining experiences. From savory satay skewers to delightful seafood dishes and tempting desserts, the culinary delights were a treat for the taste buds.
The bustling atmosphere, vibrant colors, and tantalizing scents of Petaling Street Markets created an immersive experience that showcased the vibrant spirit of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown. It was a place where locals and tourists alike could embrace the lively energy, explore diverse goods, and savor the delicious flavors of Malaysian street food
Rising early, we hopped into a Grab and headed to the mesmerizing Batu Caves, just a short 15-minute drive from the city center. As we approached, the grandeur of the caves and temples became increasingly evident, beckoning us to explore their wonders. One of the most remarkable aspects was the fact that entry was free, making it an ideal destination for travelers on a budget.
Arriving just before 8am, we strategically beat the heat and the crowds, ensuring a more serene and comfortable experience. The cool morning air enveloped us as we made our way up the towering staircase leading to the entrance of the caves. The sight that greeted us was simply awe-inspiring. Majestic statues, vibrant colors, and intricate Hindu shrines adorned the cave walls, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of spirituality and culture.
As we ventured deeper into the caves, we marveled at the natural formations and the interplay of light and shadow that danced across the rugged surfaces. The gentle echoes of prayers and the soft chimes of temple bells added to the mystical ambiance, enveloping us in a sense of tranquility and reverence.
A valuable tip for visitors is to explore Batu Caves in the morning to avoid the sweltering heat that intensifies as the day progresses. The caves can become quite hot, so it's advisable to carry water and wear comfortable clothing that covers your knees and shoulders, as a sign of respect for the religious significance of the site.
Our experience at Batu Caves was truly enchanting, leaving us with a deep appreciation for the intricate beauty of the temples and the spiritual atmosphere that permeated the air. It was a journey into a realm of ancient traditions and natural marvels, reminding us of the sacred wonders that exist within the heart of Malaysia.

- Download Grab (like Uber) it will start working once you are in Malasia and is very affordable. If you get a SIM at the airport, you can use Grab to get to your accomodation, and don't have to worry about bartering with the taxies at the airport, and risking getting ripped off (Digi is a good SIM option and didn't seem to be more expensive at the airport. around 40RM for unlimited data)
