Itinerary Overview
Spend a day in Austin cycling alongside the Colorado River and after your finished find yourself meandering through the quirky and eclectic stores in South Congress, I spent two days in Austin and found that it was enough time to get a feel for the city. For a contrast to city life, slow down the pace, and see why the little town of Smithville is a popular location for film producers after leaving Austin I spent two nights in Smithville.
We started our day very early in the morning to take advantage of the sun and the good weather, the view and the feeling of peace in this place is indescribable.
When you're looking for a weekend adventure, or making rest stops on a long road trip, Colorado River is a great place to detour! Explore all the amazing sights to see along the river, and engage in activities like camping, boating, hiking and more! Highly recommended
After waking up in my lovely hotel room, I made my way downstairs to use one of the bikes provided to hotel guests for free. The Line hotel is a great location as it is right next to the Colorado River, a great place to go for a morning bike ride. There is a lovely paved route along the river, winding it's way all the way up to Zilker Botanical Garden. There are plenty of photo worthy stops along the way! After a morning ride I walked over to South Congress where I had fun exploring all of the boutique shops, be sure to visit Alens Boots to sharpen up your Texas style! After a long day cycling and exploring the shops I was ready for a hearty southern style dinner. Well... look no further than Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken (that's the name of the restaurant). Even if you think you can't fit anymore in I wouldn't miss the opportunity for desert, pecan pie with a side of vanilla ice cream. Of course you can't have a visit to Austin without finishing your night by visiting one of it's many famous live music venues, I would recommend The Elephant Room or the Continental Club.
There is a reason Smithville is a popular destination for film producers. It's undeniable southern charm and the 1950 vibes make for a uniquely Texas small town experience. Buescher State Park is a short drive out of town and provides a great morning activity, hiking amongst beautiful rugged scenery. After a morning of hiking you can head into town to explore many of the eclectic antique shops in town. If you are lucky they might even be shooting a movie or television series in town! There are many food options in town but if you are looking for a traditional Texas BBQ I would recommend Zimmerhanzel's BBQ on the outskirts of town. If you are looking for something more up market Honey's Pizza is a great stop, they also make delicious cocktails!
