Lisbon Itinerary and Surfing in Portugal
Close to breathtaking nature, local food and a vibrant culture - Lisbon and its surroundings don’t leave much to be desired. If possible visit Lisbon in June and experience the biggest sardine party.

Santo Antonio - Lisbons famous sardine festival
Traffic in the city can be mad, especially during the festivities
Itinerary Overview
We stayed in Lisbon for 6 days and enjoyed the historical streets of Alfama being filled with the smell of grilled sardines and locals dancing at every corner.
To escape the hustle and bustle of the city we rented a car and spend an other week in Ericeira - Portugal’s Surf Mekka.
Alfama is the historical part of Lisbon with old streets and nice restaurants and cafes. We started our 6 days here with a free walking tour. It’s the best way to get to know the history behind Lisbons old town. Apart from that Santo Antonio is by far the highlight of the year - not just for tourists but also for locals. We ate grilled sardines on the streets and danced to popular portugese live music. This is definitely a highlight to remember and a huge recommendation for you to visit Lisbon at the beginning of June.
After a lot of dancing and sangria in Alfama we needed a bit of relaxation so we rented a car and drove up north to the little surfer town Ericiera.
On the way from Lisbon to Ericeira we passed amazing coastlines and the most western point on Europes mainland - cabo da Roca. I definitely recommend a quick stop here to enjoy the great views. After a 3 hours drive we then reached Ericeira. Ericeira is a sleepy coastal town during autumn to spring but in summer it becomes a surfer Mekka. We stayed here for an other week and enjoyed the mix between laid back fishing town and vibrant surfer Party place. Even though it’s a small little town there are plenty of things to do within a week. We rented surf boards and went surfing on amazing beaches, went on a little hike along the coastline and ended on the famous surf parties at the skate park “Boardriders”. If you are looking for a nice place to shop surfing gear and clothes “58 Surf Shop” is a recommendation. A good place to surf and enjoy a cold beer after is Praia de Ribiera d’Ilhas - but watch out at the weekend there are sometimes surf competitions.

If you don’t want to rent a car they’re also cheap busses from Lisbon to Ericeira. You will miss the coastline views on the way though, so I recommend renting a car
