Kuala Lumpur was more like a transit place for us as we flew there from Europe and later took another flight to Langkawi. We only had two days there which was not enough time to go see Cameron Highlands. But if you have a bit more time this can be an excellent day trip form KL.

We mostly explored the city center of Kuala Lumpur and took advantage of our great lodging.

One morning we decided to go visit the famous Batu Caves Temple that are a little bit on the outskirts of the city. To be completely honest I have very mixed feelings about this temple. It’s very crowded and overwhelming. There was some kind of ceremony when we got there and there were many people walking up the stairs, very loud music, and it was extremely hot and humid. When you’re on the stairs there is not even a tiny bit of shadow so keep that in mind and bring sun protection with you. I don’t think this place is suitable for people traveling with small children because of the surroundings. We got there by Grab (it’s like Uber and works pretty much everywhere in SEA) and it took about half an hour from KL city center.

Langkawi is a great place for a beach holiday. If you’re looking for sun, lovely beach and good food - that’s the place to go!

We stayed in a hotel that was very close to Pantai Cenang Beach and it was a very convenient location. We were far enough from the hustle and bustle of the busy main road but close enough to go for a sunset every single day and find plenty of food options in a walking distance.

Once you‘re bored of the beach there are plenty of activities on Langkawi. I totally recommend going on a Mangrove Forest tour as it was our personal favourite! But make sure you’re responsible and chose your trip wisely. Avoid tour operators that will offer monkey and eagle feeding 'sessions'. Monkeys and eagles are wild animals and they should not be fed as part of the tourist attraction as this destroy the fragile ecosystem of the island. We do recommend our tour operator (Junglewalla) as they were the ethical, responsible option. The guides were very knowledgable and excellent at spotting animals and sharing a ton of super interesting information about the area.

I also recommend to go on Skybridge. Just keep in mind that in order to get there, you must take a cable car. If you have fear of heights and happen to be there on a windy day, do reconsider. The cable car ride takes about 30 minutes and if it’s windy, it will be a wobbly ride. But once you get in the bridge, the view is incredible!

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I would have skipped Batu Caves and go to Cameron Highlands instead.
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Download GRAB and ser up the account before you go. It’s like Uber but a lot more popular in SEA. You’ll be able to get to your hotel from the airport even if you don’t yet have any local currency etc
  • Booking details?

We booked everything by ourselves about 2 months prior to the trip. We flew Quatar from Europe to Kuala Lumpur and the AirAsia from KL to Langkawi. We booked our Langkawi Mangrove Tour with this company https://junglewalla.com/langkawi-unesco-cruise/
