Highs & Lows

Omarama Hot Tubs

Roads extremely icy, driving was quite dangerous

Itinerary Overview

3 day trip to the McKenzie country.

Stayed in Twizel 2 nights and visited the Aoraki/ Mount Cook National Park (New Zealand’s highest mountain).

Next day we visited Omarama and walked to the clay cliffs before having a soak in the Omarama Hot tubs.

McKenzie County is a must-visit destination in New Zealand for those seeking stunning natural landscapes and outdoor activities. Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook National Park are two of the main attractions, with their breathtaking scenery and opportunities for stargazing, hot springs, and hiking. Twizel, the town where most visitors stay, has a charming small-town vibe and offers a variety of shops and restaurants. The drive to McKenzie County is also a highlight, with picturesque views along the way. The only downside might be the distance to other major cities in New Zealand, but for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban areas, McKenzie County is the perfect retreat. Overall, McKenzie County is an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, and is sure to leave visitors with unforgettable memories

We used a stunning day walking along the Hooker Valley Track. Sometimes considered the best day walk in New Zealand we were lucky enough to get a clear day with snow on the ground. The track is a gentle 10km out and back track with very little elevation gain. The track has multiple view points and ends at Hooker Lake which often has icebergs. There is a clear view of Aoraki at the end. In addition to the main attractions, McKenzie County also offers plenty of outdoor activities for all levels of adventurers. We were fortunate enough to experience the Hooker Valley Track on a clear day, with snow on the ground, which is considered by some to be the best day walk in New Zealand. The gentle 10km out-and-back track features multiple viewpoints and ends at the Hooker Lake, which is often dotted with icebergs. The highlight of the walk is the clear view of Aoraki, New Zealand's highest peak, at the end of the track. The scenery along the way is simply breathtaking, with snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes, and lush vegetation. Overall, McKenzie County is a nature lover's paradise, with plenty of opportunities for adventure and exploration

Omarama is a charming rural town in the McKenzie country. Most people stop here for lunch on the way to Wanaka and Queenstown however there are some amazing hot pools that make it worth a nights stay.

The clay cliffs are also worth spending an hour or so there to see this unique natural formations. The Clay Cliffs are a unique geological formation located in the Omarama region of McKenzie County, New Zealand. They are made up of layers of gravel and silt that were deposited by glaciers more than a million years ago, and then exposed and eroded by wind and water over time. The result is an impressive series of sharp pinnacles and ravines that resemble a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. The colors of the cliffs change depending on the light and time of day, ranging from white to gold to orange, creating a striking visual display.

After we headed to the hot pools where we  had a 90 minute soak with a beautiful view. The private woodfired tubs are designed to be very secluded and you can control  the temperature. You can also  order cheese platters, wine, or beer to your tub making it a very special date or day with your friends .

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

This was the right amount of time for these two destinations. I would of liked to have done a more challenging hike in the Aoraki National Park, but winter conditions made these too dangerous.
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

As mentioned it was extremely cold, do not underestimate how cold this basin can be over winter. One day it never got above O degrees. However this made the hot tubs more amazing. Our pipes at the accommodation froze so it was difficult to get water but not impossible. We saw 7 crashes in 2 days due to icy roads. However the region is also at its most beautiful during winter and it adds to the atmosphere so don’t be put off just bring correct clothing and drive carefully.
  • Restaurant recommendations?

We cooked to save money but the platter at the hot tub was delicious.
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Arrive early to the hot tubs so they get them started for you. The hot tubs are fire heated and not turned on until you are at the complex so can take 20 minutes to heat up.
  • Packing tips?

Hiking and comfortable clothes. This is the country so no need to bring fancy clothing.
  • Transportation Tips?

Public transport is minimal in this area- you will need a car.
  • Booking details?

Plenty of airbnb or holiday homes for rent in this area as it is very popular summer destination. If travelling over summer you will need to book hot tubs a few weeks in advance on any day. In winter you will need to book weekends a few weeks in advance, but should be able to be more spontaneous in the weekdays.
