Itinerary Overview
With my sister we decided to prepare for a one week bicycle trip in the German part of Switzerland following “la route du cœur”. We wanted to do it as cheap as possible. So we decided to do wild camping each time we could and cook our own meal with a gaz stove.
We took the train with our two heavy bicycle and get off in Thun. We went then to Saudlauen to visit the grottes and to have a amazing view on the Thun, Lake.
Then we continue a little bit further than Thun to find a place to sleep. We put our tente on a colline next to a road but in a really quiet place because we were to tired to find a better place. The day after we understood that we took the wrong path and that a neighbor offered us to take a shower in it’s house we finally fund our way to go to Burgdorf.
We visited this small village and then find a farm where they rented place of camping and spent de night there.
We then went to a village where there is an Emmental factory and visit it. Then we headed to Wilisau, Lucern, Zug and finally Zürich to take the train back to Geneva after a storm in Zug which got our stuff wet.
From Geneva we got off the train and arrive in Thun. A small city in the German part of Switzerland. I remember just scrolling into the cute streets, taking a cold coffee and watching the surfer surfing in the middle of the down of Thun. Yes, you read that right, you don't need an ocean to surf. Many people practice this sport on the river that runs through Thun. The rapid force of water gushing down from lake Thun through the bridge, creates swirls on river Aare. And due to this friction, the waves are created which are perfect for surfing
After scrolling in the streets of Thun we decided ride a little bit our bikes to go to Saint. beatus caves. The caves tour was nice but was what really amazing was the view on the Thun lake when we were outside the caves.
Lucerne is a charming city with is famous bridge, its lake and and its surrounding mountains.
If you go to Lucern you will for sure go to the bridge and scroll into the old romantic city center. Be sure also not to miss the Swiss Museum of Transport of the most visited museum of Switzerland.
The Lucerne Bridge is made entirely of wood and is one of the symbol of Switzerland. So don't forget to walk on it and you can also enjoy a drink along the Reuss river where the bridge is.
If you want to enjoy a little bit the lake you can do a boat tour around it to enjoy the landscape and some fresh air.
Don't forget to scroll into the old city center to see the many nice square and the t painted facades.
Finally if you like museums, you won't be disappointed. There are many of them including the transportation one if you are interested.
Q & A
What would you have changed?
I should have checked my bike thoroughly before setting off as it had a problem with the gears.Anything go wrong during the trip?
The night we slept in Zug a storm broke out and all our belongings and our tent were soaked. Fortunately we were very lucky as a farmer came and offered us to spend the night at his place. We accepted of course. The next day we left with a basket of plums from his farm. I will never forget his kindness and warm welcome despite his precarious farm.Tips you would give a friend?
Prepare your belongings thoroughly. Take biodegradable soap so that you can wash in the lakes and rivers and also take long spoons so that you can refresh yourself if a water source is not nearby. And take only the essentials so you don't gain extra weight on your bike.Packing tips?
If you want to do a bicycle trip, don't forget to pack some special shorts for you butt. Because it will hurt like hell!
