Itinerary Overview
My one-week surf trip to Fuerteventura started in El Cotillo, where I enjoyed the clear Atlantic waves on the northern beach. This place in the northeast of the island is ideal for quickly reaching top surf spots while still enjoying a pleasantly relaxed vibe, without being in the midst of the party scene.
Next, an excursion took me to the North Shore to Playa Punta Blanca, amidst impressive volcanic landscapes, offering a different surfing experience. This spot is popular among surfers who already have some level of experience, as it is a reef spot and you can only ride green waves. But when you catch one, you can ride it endlessly. I was fortunate, despite not having much experience, and it was incredible.
For less experienced surfers, I would definitely recommend visiting Punta Blanca with a surf school. For everyone else, the entire North Shore is good, but it may take a bit of patience to reach by car due to the partially unpaved roads.
A cultural highlight was the visit to Betancuria, a historic town with charming cobblestone streets and an imposing church.
A rest day in the surfer town of Lajares gave me the opportunity to explore the local market, which takes place every Saturday. There you can find all sorts of handmade items from the region and some delicious treats, usually accompanied by live music. So it's ideal for souvenir shopping. Afterwards, you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the town. Contrary to what one might expect, this popular surfer town is not directly by the sea, but rather more inland. The reason for this is that many surf schools have settled there due to its central location. From there, you can reach numerous different surf spots and decide where to go based on conditions and skill level.
A day trip to Cofete impressed me with breathtaking mountain landscapes and an endless, deserted beach. This place radiated an extraordinary calm.
My return to El Cotillo for the final surf days was accompanied by mixed feelings. The waves that I had grown fond of called me one last time. The journey home was accompanied by a mixture of longing and grateful memories.
I will gladly visit Fuerteventura and its surf spots again and again. The rugged beauty, the power of the ocean, and the play of colors on the island deeply impressed and inspired me.

El Cotillo The perfect starting point to immerse yourself in island life
My stay in El Cotillo was a true oasis of relaxation. The charming fishing village on the north coast of the island welcomed me with its serene, youthful atmosphere and breathtaking coastal landscapes. You can easily reach the village by bus in approximately 45-60 minutes from the airport, or you can opt to rent a car, which is a helpful and not very costly investment. Many fantastic beaches are best accessed by car or with the assistance of a surf school.
For my accommodation, I chose the Surf Villa Koa, which is located a convenient 10-minute bike ride from the city center. It comes highly recommended, especially because it is affiliated with a surf school. The staff is incredibly friendly and serves an excellent breakfast in the morning.
In addition to relaxing hours on the beach and invigorating surf sessions in the sea, I also embarked on a hike along the impressive coastal cliffs. The El Toston lighthouse offered a spectacular view of the turquoise blue sea. The beaches near the lighthouse are within walking distance, but if you have a surfboard, I would recommend using a car, as the wind can make it quite challenging. These beaches are perfect for beginners or surfers looking for a more relaxed experience.
In the evenings, El Cotillo offers a wonderful selection of unique shops and a diverse range of charming restaurants. Overall, my stay in El Cotillo was an unforgettable experience. The combination of a relaxed atmosphere, excellent cuisine, and breathtaking nature truly make this place a gem on Fuerteventura. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

Betancuria The Green Oasis of Fuerteventura.
A visit to Betancuria is an essential part of any trip to Fuerteventura. This historical town, located in the heart of the island, captivates with its charming cobblestone streets and impressive church. Additionally, it is one of the few green oases on the island, providing a bit of variation from the otherwise sandy landscape. Betancuria exudes tranquility and tradition, with its historic buildings narrating stories from times gone by.
The distance from El Cotillo to Betancuria is approximately 40 kilometers, and the car journey is a delightful expedition through the picturesque landscape of the island. The well-maintained road allows for a relaxed drive, which can be completed in about 45 minutes.
The trip to Betancuria also offers the opportunity to experience the diverse nature of Fuerteventura, as the landscape gradually transforms from the coastal region into a more mountainous environment. The road winds through impressive canyons and past breathtaking viewpoints.
Upon arrival in Betancuria, one immerses oneself in the rich history and culture of the island. Exploring the historical sites and strolling through the well-kept streets is an unforgettable experience. Furthermore, Betancuria provides the chance to savor local specialties and acquire handmade souvenirs.
An excursion to Betancuria enriches any visit to Fuerteventura. It is a journey to the roots of the island, offering a deeper insight into its history and traditions.
