Itinerary Overview
Serra do tepequem is located 210 km from the capital, Boa Vista-roraima, the highest point of the mountain, at 1,022 m altitude. It is little known by travelers, but it has become one of the most sought after tourist spots in Roraima. for having a very interesting history for being an old eldorado of gold and diamond miners, between the 30s and 80s, the mountain is privileged by nature: waterfalls, streams and forests, which resisted the environmental degradation caused by prospector.
The mountain has a Tourist Assistance Center, Craft Center, tourist guides, shops, small restaurants, camping, inn, hostels. a good structure to receive tourists. this place can be reached by bus, car and by plane, as it has an airstrip.
As we are traveling by bike, climbing this mountain while cycling, it was a very difficult path because it was a very steep climb, which took us an entire morning to reach the top of the mountain. Upon arriving we already found a beautiful view of the community surrounded by hills and we already met local people who advised us on where to stay and the beautiful places to visit.
Soon we met a person who worked at a camping site, next to a waterfall, in which we spent 7 days sharing beautiful moments and getting to know various places that were around.
- Cachoeira do barata
There was a camping site near the waterfall whose people who worked at this place invited us to spend some days, to rest and get to know the places around us where we shared good times and experiences.
The waterfall has several falls and large pools of cold water, often transparent, many use the walls around the wells to jump and have fun. At the end of the falls there is a natural swimming pool that turns green on sunny days, which must go down a stone path where it is a little slippery in which one must be careful.
- Cachoeira do funil
This waterfall was the target of several explosions and was significantly modified by the prospectors to remove the precious stones, today the only wealth that is taken from this place are the images and the sounds of the waterfall.
To get to the waterfall, we had to go through a long jungle trail, cross two rivers and climb rocks, on the way we found small waterfalls and water wells. It took three and a half hours of walking to finally find the waterfall, it was an incredible sight to see from below, as it was very high.
There is the possibility to climb on top of the waterfall but you had to climb very tall and slippery rocks and go through a trail with lots of undergrowth and trees. When we arrived the top of the waterfall we saw that it was very worthwhile because we saw an incredible view. it is an ideal place for those who like adventure.
- Plateau of Tepequém
The road to the Plateau of Tepequém, is a more preserved area of the region, where the mining arrived with little force. To go to this place you can go on your own as we were or you can hire the local guide that is available in hostels and tourist center.
We did a 10 kilometer hike to the highest point of the 1100 meters mountain range. Along a trail that is not always visible, up and down through the vegetation of caatinga, rocks and streams. On the way, you will look for orchids, bromeliads and ferns and some insects that are typical of the region. at the end, the view of the valley, with a view of the mountains. the landscape is really beautiful.
- Cachoeira do Paiva
Paiva waterfall is 2 km from the city, there is a very visible trail and a ladder that facilitates the arrival. It is a very humid place with a lot of lush vegetation, at the end of the stairs is the waterfall. When it is drier you have the possibility to pass, find many wells of crystal clear water and climb some big stones that exist in this place, but you have to be very careful because sometimes the stones are slippery.
Below that place is one of the highest waterfalls in Tepequém, known as Laje Verde, a place for adventurers and people who enjoy the adrenaline. to get there you have to go through waterfalls, through cliffs on the slopes where even through a forest that all the way appeared not to have been explored. it is worth mentioning that there are slippery rocks and areas with very high falls, so you must hire a tour guide.
Crossing on the other side of the waterfall there is a viewpoint with one of the most incredible views, to find it you have to go up a trail of sandy path and low and dry vegetation. one can admire the view of the plain as far as the horizon line can be seen. Visitors often use the site for meditation and photographs.
