Highs & Lows

Night skiing on holidays!

Skiing for two weeks can really make you sore, make sure to have the right equipment.

Itinerary Overview

Skiing in Keystone Colorado is amazing! It is much less crowded than the other large ski resorts in Colorado which is great when trying to avoid lines. They did a good job at keeping everything covid-safe even though it meant no indoor dining and only to-go food. The resort has runs from green to double black so theres room for everyone to have fun and ski at their own level.

Breckenridge is a much larger mountain than Keystone and has about an extra 500 feet of elevation along with many hiking trails if that suits your fancy. I have also heard that it is better for skiers than snowboarders. The space feels more "resorty" so you have more options for lodging and food but with that comes more guests and crowds.

We took a quick personal tour of the University of Colorado Boulder campus which was on winter break at the time, then we got breakfast at a great little restaurant (see photo for what I ate) and shopped around the downtown area for a little. If I had more time and if it was warmer I would have liked to do some rock climbing in the area!

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I would have cut the trip short a few days (make it a 10 day trip) because you don't realize how much altitude and intense skiing can take out of you. It's nice to sometimes take some days off and rest. Or, alternatively, just cut the trip short.
  • Tips you would give a friend?

If you don't have your own skis, consider demoing them from the resort, for a bit more money you can get skis that aren't just rentals (higher quality) and at most places if you decide you like them, you can buy them for a discount afterwards. The type of ski you use is also super important depending on the conditions, fat and wide skis for powder and narrow skis with sharper edges if you like to have nice turns. Employees will be able to help you figure out which is best for you and the day(s) you'll be skiing.
  • Packing tips?

Lots of socks and long underwear! I basically needed a new pair of ski clothes everyday (or to do laundry a lot) because of how sweaty and stinky they got while skiing. I then really only needed a few pairs of nice clothes for dinner that I re-wore.
  • Transportation Tips?

The best option for skiing in Keystone is to stay somewhere you can ski in and out of. If you plan to leave Keystone and go to other mountains (like Breck) get a car if possible, the bus is great if you are staying nearby but it's so much nicer to just drive which takes about half the time and feels much more covid safe.
  • Any surprises?

Skiing in Keystone Colorado is really the only mountain around that has night skiing, however, it's only on certain holiday weekends so if possible, plan your trip around a time when you can night ski! It's so nice to watch the sunset over the top of the mountain and then ski as it gets darker.

Lodging

  • VRBO in Keystone village. Walking distance to a ski lift, room was small but very affordable and manageable!

  • La Quinta Inn by Wyndham Denver Westminster, we only really stayed here because it was the cheapest option ($50!!) it was an ok location, short drive to Boulder and Denver, and the room was clean so no complaints!
