Trekking cannot be missed

Pollution in the cities

Itinerary Overview

Spending a few days exploring Kathmandu and neighbouring villages before taking the bumpy 10 hour bus to Pokhara (the city close to the Anna Purna trekking region). I have always wanted to explore Kathmandu with it's rich history and eastern philosophies.

Pokhara is another lovely city to unwind in I hadn't heard of it before but very glad I visited.

The Nepalese and so friendly I would love to visit again .

In this short time you can get a taste of what Nepal has to offer and experience it's diverse landscapes.

Kathmandu's architecture is stunning and feels authentic and traditional in most areas. However pollution is extremely bad there especially in the backpacker hotspot of Thamel which is a real shame.

I had a long list of items to rent/buy for my trek which is super easy in Kathmandu and you can get counterfeit brands like North Face with fairly good quality and great prices.

I was lucky enough to be there on Nepalese new year celebrating the start of 2081 in their calender. I explored Durbur Square as well as monkey temple and was very fortunate to see the Kamari Goddess in a parade around town which Is extremely rare and interesting.

Pokhara is beautiful, yet touristic, with lots of good restaurants, plenty of shopping destinations and opportunities to explore the lake oy boat. It is the ideal destination to begin and end the many famous treks of Nepal.

I indulged in healthy food and smoothies frequently at Juicery (of which they have 3 sites) and the sister restaurant - Vegan way perfect to fuel and rest before and after trekking.

As I went in May it was burning season where farmers burn their crops - this meant the majestic mountains were unfortunately obstructed by smoke during my time there. So I recommend October/November for the best views.

I used Pokhara as a base before starting the Mardi Himal Trek. This is a 5 day trek (which can be done in 3/4 days or extended as long as you like thanks to the many accomodation opportunities en route).

The trek peaks at it's base camp or 4500m and was a real highlight of my year travelling. It is suitable for anyone with a good level of fitness and is an easy to follow route meaning it could be completed without a guide if you wish. I opted for a guide and it minimised logistics of booking a bed and any other decisions. It consists of a lot of steps and boosts beautiful views  in the months of October, November, and April for best chances at seeing Anna Purna 1 &2 as well as Fishtail peak.
